I never thought I’d see the day where I’d actively enjoy working out. Buying cute workout gear is my favorite part of going to the gym. A gym membership is the perfect excuse to revamp your closet with clothes that you wouldn’t normally wear in your everyday life. My work style involves a lot of cardigans and fun dresses. But put me in front of a bright tank top with a punny, inspirational message and I’ll leave the store with one in every color.
There’s nothing more relaxing than going for a quick morning jog. That is, until you factor in the freeeezing cold. While it’s true that you’ll feel a lot hotter once your blood is pumping from your workout, that doesn’t mean you can’t prepare for the cold weather.
Your clothes can be fashionable and functional at the same time. Here’s how you can get the perfect outfit for your workout without sacrificing comfort and mobility.
A little strategic layering will take you a long way.
Let’s start with the obvious. The secret to being prepared for those chilly winter mornings and nights is wearing layers made of materials that are built to handle the cold. Spandex leggings and cotton tees are great at keeping the warmth in. It’s easier to cover up this first layer without looking or feeling too bulky.
Stock up on “anti-sweat”, breathable clothing.
Finding the right base layer is super important. You are more likely to stay dry and sweat-free if your gym clothes are made of polypropylene, which is more commonly known as the “moisture-wicking” fabric. Polyproylene doesn’t hang out to your sweat like most fabrics do. Wearing clothes that is non-absorbent will stop you from feeling that cold chill from your sweat.
Choose your footwear wisely.
Whether you’re working out indoors or outdoors, you want sneakers that will make you feel light on your feet and also prevent you from slipping on black ice. Test out the soles and make sure they can hold up in wet conditions so your feet stay dry.
Always wear a hat and hand warmers wherever you go, regardless of your workout routine.
Complete your outdoor workout outfit, while also keeping the wind away with a cute and cozy beanie. If you’re worried that you’ll start sweating tons or get really hot, you can take the hat off as needed. Throw in hand warmers for good measure. I always regret leaving my mine back once I’m in the middle of my 4 – 5 mile walk to the pier and back.
